The following document will help you set up and configure the D-Link DSL 500 to work with PPP-based DSL connection from Pacific Internet

  1. This will require a PC, and the abilty tomodify TCP/IP settings. It will also require a web browser. The D-Link needs to be connected to the PC using an ethernet cable.
  2. By default the ethernet IP address of the DSL500 is 192.168.0.1 To communicate with the router via its web interface you will need to set up a PC with the following tcp/ip settings
            IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.2
            Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
            Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1

    Once these settings are in effect (you may need to restart your pc for this to happen) you should be able to ping the router, like so.
    C:\ping 192.168.0.1

    Reply from 192.168.0.1: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=30
    Reply from 192.168.0.1: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=30

    Once this is successfull you will be able to access the router via its web interface.

  3. You will need to put the address of http://192.168.0.1 into the address bar of your web browser.
  4. You will see a screen which says "Log in to web-based administration module" When you click on this link, a window will appear asking for a password. The default password to the router is:
    	User : admin
    	Pass : admin

    We reccomend that you change this at a later point.

  5. Once you are logged in, you will be at a screen entitled "Router/Bridge Configuration". There are a couple of changes that need to be made to the default settings for your DSL connection to work optimanally with Pacific Internet
  6. We reccomend that PPPoA is used - This is option "2" under "Connection Profile"
  7. We reccomend that "Encapsulation Method" to "VC-Mux"
  8. You will need to enter the PPP username and password that is associated with the service. You will need to restart the router for these changes to take effect. All other settings should be left as default.

    The router will automattically attempt to connect to Pacific Internet An example of how the configuration should look is included below.

  9. If the information above did not correlate with what you see in the web interface, its possible you are running some outdated modem firmware. This document is built around
    Firmware revision R2.01B5 for DSL-500 (Australia)

    D-Link relase firmware upgrades quite often, It may be a good idea to check their webpage for latest firmware infomation: http://www.dlink.com.au/tech/drivers/files/routers/dsl500.htm

Additional Information

  • Configuration -> Router Bridge:
    This is where the bulk of the PPP setup and config is done.
  • Configuration -> Connection Profile:
    This is where we can add and remove the different "types" of connections available. The R2.01 supllied by default with the D-Link has the most common configurations already set up.
  • Configuration -> Port Redirection:
    This is where you can set up network/port address translation (NAT/PAT) for computers running services 'behind' the D-Link 500.

  • Maintenence -> Factory Reset
    Set modem back to factory default settings
  • Maintenence -> Update Firmware
    Load new firmware into the D-Link 500
  • Configuration -> Ethernet IP Address:
    If you run your network on an IP range other than 192.168.0.0/24 then you will need to change this information accordingly.
  • Summary -> Line Condition:
    Finding more infomation about your DSL line can be found here This is the actual infomation about how your line is provisioned, and the highest speed it is capable of.
