Dlink DSL 200 USB Modem installation issues: There is a useful site for issues with a review of the Dlink 200 usb put together from info for a DSL connection to BT Internet in the UK. Note: t hat the screen shots show the setup for the UK, and you need to subsitute correct values for Australia (e.g: VPI=8, VCI=35 etc). It is available from the following site: http://www.adslguide.org.uk/hardware/reviews/2001/q4/dlink_dsl200.asp It includes a section on USB Bus Bandwidth, and screenshots for checking this. To get to the USB Bus Bandwidth screen, in windows go to: How to check resources used by USB devices on USB Controller in WinXp go to Start -> Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager -> Universal Serial Bus Controllers should have: Intel (r) 852371AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller or VAA Rev 2 USB Controller or something similar -> double click -> Advanced shows bandwidth consuming devices. The Dlink 200 USB device can take up to approx 80% available bandwidth through a single USB 1.1 compliant controller. (note: according to this site: USB 2.0 cards are also available - they support 1.x devices and have around 480Mbps bandwidth, so this is a possible solution for bandwidth issues). DLINK spec sheet: This is useful to check for the technical specs for the DSL200 http://www.dlink.com.au/products/broadband/dsl200/ DLINK also has an FAQ which includes the following item worth noting: FAQ Link: http://www.dlink.com.au/tech/faq/modems/dsl200.htm 5. Why DSL-200 stops responding after leaving it on for a while? Check your power saving settings under Power Options or Power Management in Control Panel and BIOS (you can access BIOS settings at the moment when your PC just boots up). Make sure you have the corresponding power saving features disabled (esp. USB power saving) Reinstall DSL-200 using driver ver 1.08 or later to see if the same symptom persists. You can download the latest driver from Driver Downloads section. The installation examples are also available under Tech Resources Restarting your PC should recover communication with the modem. BIOS/motherboard and XP issues There is a known issue with Asus motherboards and Windows XP USB drivers. If the customer has an Asus motherboard and they are using Windows Xp, get them to make sure they install the latest USB drivers that come with the cd for their motherboard, rather than the drivers built in with XP. The customer needs to also use the latest drivers for XP for the DSL 200, rather than what's on the CD (which may contain the earlier drivers). Here is what a general search on USB and XP turns up on support.microsoft.com http://search.support.microsoft.com/search/nlsearch.aspx?Catalog=LCID%3d1033%26CDID%3dEN-US-KB%26PRODLISTSRC%3dON&Product=winxp&Query=usb%2520drivers&Queryc=usb+drivers&REF=false&srchstep=0&KeywordType=ALL&Titles=false&numDays=&maxResults=25 Some of these links may have some pointers for customers who are having problems with the DSL 200. e.g.: Windows XP Does Not Detect Your New USB Device (Q314634) http://support.microsoft.com/search/preview.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q314634 may be useful for customers who can't detect the USB device. Other issues: Customers may download the updated drivers, and use the defaults specified -> which may not work. The following settings have been verified to work with XP customers: Other Service provider ->WAN driver ->VPI 8 VCI 35 ->RFC 2364 PPPoATM NULL Encapsulation ->Modulation: Multimode (default is gmdt - make sure this is on multimode to be safe) plug in dsl 200 into usb hub when prompted: go through driver install should come up with dlink dsl -200 adsl loader ->select: install software automatically should come up with: found new hardware dlink dsl 200 adsl modem (WAN) -> select install automatically lights on mode should come on ok doesn't prompt to reboot (this is ok) try connecting straightaway from Dlink Dial up ppp connection, with: username@aus-dsl.net Other issues: If the USB device has not correctly installed, there may be no ADSL link light on the modem. This doesn't necessarily mean there is no sync on the line, which is nasty. Before reporting a no sync fault, check to see if you can verify that the dsl 200 has been correctly installed. You should be able to see the driver for the DSL 200 listed under the properties for the USB controller. If necessary, uninstall the dsl 200 software and try the install again. ____________________________ Polly Morgan
